Mrs. Alito driven from hearing room in tears

By Aussiegirl

I thought the Democrats were opposed to torture. But the merciless public grilling they have given Samuel Alito today made Hanes for Her on the head at Abu Graib seem like a leisurely drive across the Chappaquidick bridge at midnight.

It's been sheer torture for anyone who forced themselves to watch even a few minutes of this shameful fiasco. When the Democrats endless bloviations of yesterday failed to yield some Perry Mason moment where Alito screamed out that yes -- he was a closet bigot, homophobe, woman-hating troglodyte, knuckle dragging Catholic who wants to ensure that all women die of illegal abortions, who desires to create a world where all blacks are enslaved and where homosexuals are ostracized -- today the democrats decided to take off the gloves and put on the brass knuckles -- and if Mrs. Alito had to watch while they mercilessly flogged her husband in public subjecting him to Stalinist guilt-by-association, then so be it.

If she was driven to tears, well -- that's not the worst that Ted Kennedy has been known to do to a woman. He's used to abusing women -- luckily there was no nearby body of water he could drown Mrs. Alito in.

It's not because of any sense of shame about the sins of his youth that Ted Kennedy has named his water dog "Splash". For a man who has such a dark and sinister past of woman abuse, cheating, lying and avoiding prosecution on a variety of charges ranging from cheating scandals at Harvard to his responsibility for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, he sure has a bottomless well of outrage reserved for those decent straight shooters like Alito who once belonged to a club he considers somehow suspect.

Of course, this only makes normal decent Americans realize that Alito is a decent qualified guy who is being unfairly vilified. But the sorry spectacle really lays out how desperate and despicable the angry left has become, and how little they care about basic decency and fairness, or even giving the appearance that they care.

Who could have stood the relentless hours of questioning and pressure that she and her husband have had to endure? She was on camera for over nine hours yesterday, sitting in a cramped, uncomfortable chair, having to keep a composed smile and pleasant expression on her face as scowling Senator after sneering Senator spat out their endless pontificating questions that seldom even allowed space for answers. Yet those Senators came and went during the hearing, while Alito and his family had to stay totally focussed and completely attentive to the questioning lest one little slip up become the ruination of his career and his reputation. It ought to be against the law. Where's McCain calling for the elimination of humiliation and emotional abuse?

Now Mrs. Alito has to endure the public embarrassment of becoming the story, with her picture plastered all over newspapers and the internet with tears running down her face. For someone as decent and as private as she no doubt is, this must be an additional torture in itself.

I commented yesterday on Lucianne.com before this incident today, that I marveled at her composure and I called her a saint for enduring the shameful treatment being meted out to her husband. I said that in her position I would have ripped their eyes out after about 2 hours.

They should be ashamed -- but then -- that would presume that they have any shame left -- and after today's display it's obvious they don't.

ABC News: Alito Grilling Gets Too Intense for Some

Democrats used up most of the time supposedly intended to learn the view of Judge Alito.
I mean, even the leftist The New York Times had a good headline, something like (I don't have my copy right in front of me) "But Enough About You, Now Let's Listen to Me."
I heard a local radio announcer say Biden himself used up 76 percent of the time.
I figure Alito will be another disaster, as even Clarence Thomas has disappointed time and time again (such as in the Detroit confiscation case), and Alito was appointed by an even worse president.
Still, Democrats (evil slime that most of the Democrat Senators are) let Ruth Bader Ginsburg set the limits on what she would discuss and, in fact, did practically no questioning of her.
(One Republican, probably Hatch, showed by her own standards and definition that she is racist, but voted to confirm her anyway. Wimp!)
Since their success "Borking" the judge for whom the gerund was named (and Bork really does have some fascistic and unconstitutional notions), they have been relentless in their aggression -- at least as bad as George W. Bush has been in Iraq.
Still, W is, in many ways, the president and he should be allowed to appoint his choices without all the partisan viciousness.

Yes, Michael -- it was the fact that their previous day's questioning had been such a disaster which led them to the desperate fiasco of yesterday. The only memorable moments of yesterday's hearings were both dem disasters -- one the dressing down of Kennedy by the normally liberal and tolerant Arlen Specter, and the apology of Graham which led Mrs. Alito to dissolve in tears. Her tears (as any woman or human will tell you, and as Thomas Lifson put so well today, had more to do with the sympathy offered to her by Graham, than the nastiness meted out by the Slimemaster himself, Kennedy.)

Both of these soundbite moments from the hearings made the dem side look bad and forever painted these hearings in the light of show trial and unfair smearing. Alito is sure to be approved.

Yes, we can't control them once they are on the bench, but Alito is one of the best of the best, and seems like a decent, intelligent and prudent judge who has not forgotten his roots in the middle-class, working suburbs of New Jersey. He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth and he doesn't seem to have succumbed to the limelight of the elites either. He seems like the best we can hope for.
