A new law will soon require all New Jersey doctors to complete a course on "cultural competency" to help them understand patients whose lives may be very different from their own.

The state board of medical examiners is drafting the details and, so far, no one is sure what the course will entail, where doctors will take it or how much it will cost.

New Jersey is the first state in the nation to mandate cultural training, a move sparked by a growing body of national data that shows racial disparities in health care.
